The complete perspective
Why the name matters.
McLaren's road-car story is shorter than its competition history, but its high points are extraordinary. The central-seat F1 pursued low mass and purity without compromise; the modern company used carbon structures, turbocharged power and aerodynamics to create a full range around related principles.
How it evolved
Bruce McLaren's racing organization built the foundation. The F1 arrived in the 1990s as a singular road car, the SLR reflected a Mercedes partnership, and MP4-12C relaunched McLaren as a manufacturer before P1, Senna, Speedtail and Artura expanded the vocabulary.
Carbon-fiber expertise, steering and chassis precision, packaging innovation and a competition culture that values function.
Rapid model proliferation and closely related styling have made individual modern variants difficult for some buyers to distinguish.
