Two expressions of contemporary enthusiasm
Porsche used Monterey Car Week to present two very different expressions of contemporary enthusiasm. The first was the Flachbau RS, a road-legal factory one-off developed through Porsche Sonderwunsch with Manthey. Based on a 911 GT2 RS with the Weissach package, the project reportedly required almost three years of development, wind-tunnel testing and more than 50 laps of the Nürburgring Nordschleife.
Alongside that singular commission, Porsche introduced a North America-exclusive 911 Carrera S with a six-speed manual transmission, rear-wheel drive and a 480 PS twin-turbo flat-six. One car demonstrates how far factory personalization can go; the other recognizes the continuing appeal of a traditional driver-focused configuration.
A launch is not a collectibility verdict
Neither announcement establishes future collectibility by itself. Production volume, specification, documentation, condition, market reception and actual transactions will matter more than launch-week attention.
Still, the pairing is revealing: exclusivity remains powerful, but so does mechanical engagement. The useful question is not simply which announcement attracted more attention. It is which attributes will remain meaningful after the launch cycle has passed.
Read the signal precisely
A one-off factory commission and a series-production manual model belong to different markets, but both show how manufacturers respond to enthusiast priorities. Personalization can create singularity; a manual gearbox can preserve participation.
Collectors should treat those attributes as starting points for analysis. The individual car, its evidence and its ownership history remain the basis for a defensible decision.
