Chapter 01

A Grand Prix car that could travel to its own race

On August 3, 1924, five new Bugatti Type 35s started the Grand Prix of France near Lyon. The 35-lap event used a 23.1-kilometer road circuit, and Bugatti's own account records that the cars had driven from Molsheim to Lyon without trouble. That detail captures the Type 35's unusual proposition: a purpose-built competition machine with enough civility and durability to exist beyond a closed circuit.

Its debut result did not predict its future. The cars showed speed in practice, but tire failures undermined the race. Bugatti later attributed the problem to faulty vulcanization rather than the new chassis or engine. Instead of becoming a warning against ambition, Lyon became the difficult first chapter of a competition career Bugatti says produced more than 2,500 victories and podium finishes over more than a decade.

Chapter 02

Form followed function—and became sculpture

The Type 35's shape is compact, narrow and visibly disciplined. Its horseshoe radiator, tapered tail, exposed suspension and eight-spoke wheels form a composition with almost no visual excess. Yet the beauty was not applied after the engineering. The proportions arose from the placement of the straight-eight engine, the low seating position, the slim body and the need to move efficiently through the air.

The aluminum wheels were a defining integration of structure, cooling and service. Bugatti cast the spokes, rim and brake drum together, reducing unsprung mass while allowing heat to escape. A spare could be changed with its drum, avoiding the need to re-establish the relationship between a removable wheel and a separate drum. The component became so visually distinctive that it remains part of Bugatti's identity a century later.

Chapter 03

Lightness made every system work harder

The original Type 35 used a 1,991 cc inline-eight that Bugatti rates at up to 95 PS. Its crankshaft ran in a combination of roller and ball bearings and could turn to 6,000 rpm—exceptional speed for a large engine of its period. Two carburetors supplied the engine, and a wet multi-plate clutch sent power through a four-speed gearbox.

Bugatti records speeds above 190 km/h for the early car. The number matters, but the way the car achieved it matters more. A sophisticated front axle, compact body, light wheels and careful mass management allowed modest power by modern standards to produce formidable performance. The Type 35 demonstrates a principle that remains central to great sports cars: removing weight improves acceleration, braking, steering response, tire workload and endurance at once.

Chapter 04

The owner became part of the racing department

Bugatti did not reserve the Type 35 exclusively for a works team. Cars were sold to private competitors who could drive them on the road, enter races and obtain support from the factory. That model expanded Bugatti's presence far beyond the number of works entries Ettore Bugatti could field himself. The Type 35 became both a product and a distributed competition program.

This accessibility did not make it easy. Early motor racing demanded mechanical sympathy, physical courage and an ability to read changing surfaces through a thin steering wheel. But the same qualities that made the Type 35 manageable on public roads—compact dimensions, predictable response and durability—also helped skilled private drivers exploit it in Grands Prix, hill climbs and long road races.

Chapter 05

One architecture became a family

The Type 35 name covers an evolving group rather than a single frozen specification. The original two-liter car established the shape and mechanical foundation. The Type 35A offered a less highly stressed road-oriented interpretation, while the Type 35T increased displacement to 2.3 liters for the Targa Florio. The Type 35C paired the two-liter engine with a supercharger, and the Type 35B combined supercharging with the larger 2.3-liter engine.

Bugatti states that the later Type 35B could produce up to 140 PS and exceed 215 km/h. More important than the peak figures was the continuity of the idea. The factory added power and adapted the car to different forms of competition without losing its recognizable architecture. The Type 35 became a platform before the word carried its modern automotive meaning.

Chapter 06

Sicily made the legend visible

The Targa Florio ran across demanding public mountain roads in Sicily, combining rough surfaces, elevation changes, heat and hundreds of corners. A winning car needed speed, braking, reliability and agility, while its driver needed extraordinary concentration. The Type 35 won on its first Targa Florio appearance in 1925 and Bugatti models from the family won the next four editions as well.

Five consecutive victories from 1925 through 1929 turned the Type 35's engineering virtues into an enduring public story. Success also reached Grand Prix racing, road circuits and hill climbs with drivers including Louis Chiron, Albert Divo, Tazio Nuvolari, Elizabeth Junek and Hellé Nice. Bugatti describes the Type 35 as the most successful racing car of all time, citing roughly 2,000 wins; its later historical account broadens the measure to more than 2,500 victories and podium finishes.

Chapter 07

Why authenticity is unusually complicated

A Type 35 today must be understood as both artifact and machine. The family includes multiple factory variants, period competition modifications, replacement components and cars rebuilt during long racing lives. Chassis identity, engine type, axle and wheel specification, body construction, continuous ownership evidence and documented competition history require interpretation by specialists with deep Bugatti knowledge.

A car can be historically meaningful without retaining every component fitted in Molsheim, but its story should be explicit. Period changes, later restorations and newly made parts each carry different implications. Photographs, race records, factory correspondence, registration documents and restoration files should be read together rather than reduced to a single claim of originality.

Chapter 08

The Type 35's real legacy is coherence

Many competition cars are remembered for a season, a driver or a single technical breakthrough. The Type 35 endures because its achievements reinforce one another. The wheels are beautiful because their engineering is visible. The body is elegant because it is tightly organized around the machine. The racing record is immense because the car was fast, durable, adaptable and available to customers.

That coherence is why the Type 35 belongs near the beginning of the GOAT Cars encyclopedia. It established an idea that would define the most desirable automobiles of later eras: engineering could create emotional form, competition could improve a road-going experience, and a machine built to win could also become an object people wanted simply to look at.
