Chapter 01

Endurance changed the meaning of a fast car

A Grand Prix car proves itself one corner, one braking zone and one race distance at a time. The 24 Hours of Le Mans asks a different question: can a car remain fast while darkness, weather, fatigue, fuel stops, tire wear and mechanical heat continually change the problem? Bentley's early identity was built around answering yes.

W.O. Bentley initially doubted that cars could survive the new French endurance race. A Bentley finished fourth and set a lap record at the first Le Mans in 1923, then won in 1924. By the end of the decade, the company had learned that endurance success came from more than speed. Engine flexibility, strong brakes, accessible components, disciplined pit work and drivers who understood the machinery had to function as one system.

Chapter 02

W.O. Bentley chose capacity over complication

The Speed Six began with the 6½ Litre, whose straight-six displaced 6,597 cc through a 100 mm bore and 140 mm stroke. Bentley's official history records 147 bhp at 3,500 rpm in the original single-carburetor form. It was a large, slow-revving engine by modern standards, designed to produce sustained torque rather than depend on a narrow burst of peak power.

That philosophy separated W.O. Bentley from driver and engineer Tim Birkin, who championed supercharging. Bentley preferred increasing displacement and refining breathing. The Speed Six, introduced in 1928, used twin SU carburetors, a higher compression ratio and a performance camshaft to reach 180 bhp in customer specification. The result was not merely stronger acceleration; it was effortless speed that could be maintained hour after hour.

Chapter 03

A chassis invited a coachbuilder's imagination

Bentley sold the Speed Six as a chassis rather than a standardized complete automobile. Customers chose among wheelbases and commissioned bodies from specialist coachbuilders, allowing the same mechanical foundation to become an open tourer, close-coupled saloon, formal limousine or rakish coupé. Bentley records three customer wheelbases, from 138 to 152.5 inches, with the shortest the most popular.

This was luxury before platform uniformity. The chassis, engine and controls carried the Bentley character, while weight, aerodynamics, seating and visual identity depended heavily on the body fitted above them. Two Speed Sixes can therefore share a model name while delivering materially different proportions and driving experiences. The coachbuilder is not a footnote; it is part of the car's authorship.

Chapter 04

The race car concentrated the idea

Factory competition cars reduced the wheelbase to roughly 11 feet and further developed the engine with a 6.1:1 compression ratio. Bentley records approximately 200 bhp in race specification. The engine drove through a four-speed transmission, while large drum brakes, a substantial chassis and the car's immense torque suited long, fast sections and the repeated deceleration of endurance racing.

The Speed Six did not seek the compact delicacy of the Bugatti Type 35. It expressed performance through mass, strength and momentum. The long hood, vertical radiator and external exhaust made the machinery visually dominant. It looked built to cross countries at speed—and, in competition form, to continue doing so after lighter cars and tired drivers had faded.

Chapter 05

Le Mans 1929 became a demonstration of control

At the 1929 24 Hours of Le Mans, Woolf Barnato and Tim Birkin led in a Speed Six from the opening lap to the finish. Birkin set a 7-minute 21-second lap, which Bentley says cut 46 seconds from the previous record and required an average of 83 mph. The winning car covered 2,844 kilometers in 24 hours, another race record.

The scale of the victory mattered as much as the winner. Three more Bentleys followed the Speed Six across the line, giving the company the first four positions. This was not a lucky survival or a late tactical reversal. It was a full demonstration of preparation, pace and team discipline, and Bentley notes that Le Mans would not see comparable domination by a single manufacturer for nearly three decades.

Chapter 06

The final victory completed a golden age

A Speed Six returned to win Le Mans in 1930 with Barnato and Glen Kidston, while another finished second. The result gave Bentley five victories in the race between 1924 and 1930 and made the Speed Six the company's most successful competition model. It was also the final Le Mans victory of Bentley's original independent era.

The contrast with the Blower Bentley is instructive. Birkin's supercharged 4½ Litre became a cultural icon, but Bentley's own history acknowledges that reliability compromised its racing record. The naturally aspirated Speed Six was less theatrical in concept and more complete in execution. Automotive memory sometimes favors the machine with the louder mythology; the stopwatch favored W.O.'s larger engine.

Chapter 07

The Blue Train story requires precision

Woolf Barnato added another layer to Speed Six legend in March 1930 when he raced the famous Train Bleu north from the Côte d'Azur. Bentley's history says he reached his London club before the train was due at Calais, an extraordinary road journey through rain, fog and punctures.

For years, popular retellings identified the low-roofed Gurney Nutting Sportsman Coupé as the car Barnato drove. Bentley now explains that the coupé was delivered after the event and that the actual contender was a Speed Six with H. J. Mulliner saloon coachwork. The correction improves the story rather than diminishing it: provenance is strongest when evidence is allowed to overturn a familiar image.

Chapter 08

Production numbers do not settle identity

Bentley records 182 Speed Six chassis built between 1928 and 1930. Survival, however, is more complicated than subtracting losses from a production total. Bodies were replaced as fashions changed, competition cars evolved, engines and gearboxes could be exchanged, and later restorations sometimes converted closed cars into open Le Mans-style tourers.

A serious evaluation begins with factory records and the chassis number, then traces engine, gearbox, axles, body history, ownership and competition use. Period photographs and coachbuilder records can be as important as the components present today. A beautifully built replica of a team-car body may be enjoyable, but it should not be described as original merely because its form is historically recognizable.

Chapter 09

The Speed Six made luxury and endurance inseparable

The Speed Six demonstrated that refinement and competition were not opposing ideas. Its long-stroke engine could move a substantial coachbuilt saloon with authority, yet a concentrated race version could set records through day and night. That range became central to Bentley's identity: speed should feel sustained, usable and structurally confident.

Modern grand tourers use turbocharging, active suspension, carbon structures and software to accomplish tasks the Speed Six approached mechanically. The technology has changed; the ambition remains familiar. A great Bentley should make distance feel smaller without making the journey feel ordinary. The Speed Six established that standard when endurance racing was still teaching the automobile what durability at speed could mean.
