1970–1989

The Supercar Revolution

Wedges, wings and turbocharging redefine the dream.

The whole story

The 1970s and 1980s challenged performance with emissions requirements, fuel crises and new safety standards, yet they also created the modern supercar as a cultural object. Radical styling and racing-derived technology made exotic cars visible far beyond the number of people who could own them.

What moved the automobile forward

Turbocharging restored power and introduced a new delivery character. All-wheel drive transformed rallying, aerodynamic development became increasingly explicit, and electronics began controlling fuel and ignition. The 959 previewed integrated systems while the F40 reduced the idea back toward mass, boost and purpose.

The reality behind the romance

Early emissions controls could blunt performance, turbo lag demanded technique and dramatic styling often compromised visibility and ergonomics. Group B's astonishing pace came with unacceptable danger. Poster-car mythology should not erase the uneven ways these cars actually worked.

What the era left behind

The Countach silhouette, 911 Turbo proportions and F40's exposed purpose became permanent symbols of speed. The era also set up the central modern question: whether technology should make performance easier or preserve its difficulty.
